Slow Play

All Golden Boys,
Have you recently had to wait to hit virtually every shot but were kind enough to give the group immediately in front the benefit of the doubt:  “The foursome in front of them must be holding them up?”  Then you finally get to the 11th tee on Linkside and not only wait as usual to tee off but notice there is no group to be seen on either 11 or 12 other than the foursome in front of you!

Or have you had to wait more than an hour in the clubhouse before the slowest group reports their score!  If so, you should be willing to help in an effort over several weeks to reduce the time it takes us to finish our regular Mon-Wed-Fri competition rounds.

Even though a foursome may have one or more players who are more deliberate (i.e. slower) than others in preparing for a shot, there are common sense actions the group can take to minimize the overall time it takes to complete play on each hole.  Our goal is to announce winners no later than 4 and a half hours after shotgun start on regular Mon-Wed-Fri competition rounds.

To this end, the Board will institute a program of “training and encouragement” which we believe will improve the pace of play for slower groups and decrease the frustration of those who would prefer to play faster and get home in less than five hours after tee time.  (See the GB web for minutes of August Board meeting concerning this decision.)  Larry Clee has also agreed to have his marshals roam our field of play to alert groups who are falling more than a half of a hole behind.

We have compiled a preliminary list of “faster play tips”.  Beginning Friday, 21 August, we will begin working our way through this list emphasizing one of the tips each day when teams are announced before play for that day.  If you have additional constructive suggestions, please pass them on to me or another board member.

Since none of us are going to improve our lifestyle from Golden Boys’ golf winnings, the primary goal for virtually all of us is “to have fun.”  We trust most will agree that a reasonable pace of play will enhance our golf experience and give a better chance of “having fun” than having to wait on every hole and/or wait a long time in the clubhouse before we can find out if our group is in the money.  We will therefore appreciate your cooperation in this worthwhile effort.
